Unusual Devices Running Snort

Snort is a fantastic free, open-source network intrusion detection system and sniffer.  One of Snort's best features is its ability to run on many, many different platforms.  According to the Snort documentation, Snort supports the following types of systems:

  • Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, SunOS, HP-UX, AIX, IRIX, Tru64, MacOS X Server, Win32 (Win9x/NT/2000).

It's an impressive list, to be sure.  However, what if we push the envelope a little bit?  What else can Snort run on?  In our Counter Hack Observation, Research, and Testing Laboratory Environment (CHORTLE), we have made significant advances in getting Snort functioning on the following devices:

Device Running Snort: My Linux-based Thinkpad

Nastiest Attack Yet Detected:  Buffer overflow of my HTTPD in an attempt to upload new Information Security Action Figures based on enigmatic superheroes from Saturday Night Live.

Device Running Snort: Apple iPod

Nastiest Attack Yet Detected: Someone trying to steal my Kraftwerk MP3s!  Oh the horror!

Device Running Snort: TiVo

Nastiest Attack Yet Detected: Someone trying to DELETE my weekly Star Trek Enterprise recording.  The constantly escalating level of man's inhumanity towards man never ceases to amaze and depress me.  Truly we live in depraved times.

Device Running Snort: Remote Control from a TiVo

Nastiest Attack Detected: My wife, trying to get the tuner away from me so she could watch Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.  Looks like woman's inhumanity toward man has reached a new low too.  If you don't believe me, check out Pride and Prejudice some time...

Device Running Snort: Speak&Spell

Nastiest Attack Detected: A fourth grader manipulting the EPROMs to make Speak & Spell spew choice 4-letter words like a drunken sailor.

UPDATE: Check out this version!

Device Running Snort: Sony Aibo

Nastiest Attack Detected: Heap overflow reconfiguring Aibo so that it does a nasty number on the shrubbery around my house.

Device Running Snort: Segway Human Transporter

Nastiest Attack Detected: U.S. Postal Service employee riding a Segway ambushed by rabid Sony Aibo.  The cyber dog took a huge chunk out of the mailman's pants.

Device Running Snort: Mike Poor's Underpants

Nastiest Attack Detected:  Trust me, you don't wanna know!
